A 0.8 Mile Radius

Posted on September 10, 2025September 10, 2025

Yesterday’s cliffhanger: Would Dan and Stef succeed in doing nothing on Tuesday? Would Stef stay within walking distance of the apartment all day? The answer: Mostly, yes. We went to our nearest beach, and snorkeled in our nearest cove. At the end of the day, we hit up the grocery store (involved a drive of less than a mile), and for sunset, we went to Kapalua Beach (also a drive of less than a mile). So yeah, we kept it real chill.

But first! Our little cat friend frolicked in the tree with Dan. He’s a good climber! And what heavenly trees for a little cat.

The hurricane is passing by to the east of the island. The waves were bigger than standard, and the cove murkier than Dan remembered. But we had blue skies and low winds and I have zero complaints. Wind map:

Our mission: Napili Beach. We stopped to rent beach/snorkel gear, and headed there. It was breakfast time, and we wanted macadamia pancakes from The Gazebo, two resorts down from us. Pretty place!

Ariel gave us a very hot pro tip: Skip the 40-minute line by ordering takeout, and eat it on the beach. In 10 minutes, we had macadamia pancakes with coconut syrup in the most beautiful setting imaginable.

We swam, and sat and admired the view, and swam, and sat and admired the view. After about 4 hours, we were ready to go snorkel in Honokeana Cove, the cove in front of our apartment. Because we are terrible at blogging, we did not get photos of the entry point of the cove. But here’s what it looks like from close to where we put in.

It was great snorkeling. There was a good amount of coral, and we saw many colorful fish. Best of all, I saw two turtles, and Dan saw a good four. One of the turtles swam straight at me and passed me by – that thing was enormous! Several feet long. One shy fellow went and hid under a rock, prompting me to sigh that with its round body and hiding under things, he was like the Pretty Boy of the sea. Miss my guy.

After fighting feral waves for the last several hours, I needed a dip in some domesticated waters, so headed for a very soothing dip in the hotel pool. We unwound a bit, then headed to Napili Market, where we bought stuff for dinner, and went on a beverage buying spree that people only go on when they’ve been underhydrated for a couple of days.

We cooked our mahimahi and ate leftover kahlua pork from Joey’s Kitchen on the lanai – but before sunset this time! We had sunset plans.

We headed to Kapalua Beach, where people with way more money than us stay when they come to Maui. It’s a really nice beach, with very gentle waves. Look at this crazy topiary with its keyhole for photos!

The sunset was as nice there as it is from our lanai. Weird. Suspicious.

And that was it! Shortest blog post for our least-ambitious day (although we certainly stayed busy). Tomorrow? TBD, we will review our options…right now. You’ll have to tune in tomorrow to find out.

Thanks for following!
